![]() ![]() Poole presents his findings methodically through well-documented facts and similar studies. Separated by significant eras in American history, a reader gets a clear picture of how the definition of a monster changes depending on the cultural and political events of an era. Thoughts: What makes a monster a monster? More importantly, what is the definition of a monster? In Monsters in America, Scott Poole asks these thought-provoking questions while traveling through American history following the evolution of the monster over time. Consulting newspaper accounts, archival materials, personal papers, comic books, films, and oral histories, Poole adroitly illustrates how the creation of the monstrous ‘other’ not only reflects society’s fears but shapes actual historical behavior and becomes a cultural reminder of inhuman acts.” From Victorian-era mad scientists to modern-day serial killers, new monsters appear as American society evolves, paralleling fluctuating challenges to the cultural status quo. Conflicting anxieties about race, class, gender, sexuality, religious beliefs, science, and politics manifest as haunting beings among the populace. ![]() “Monsters are not just fears of the individual psyche, historian Scott Poole explains, but are concoctions of the public imagination, reactions to cultural influences, social change, and historical events. MONSTER IN A BOX made its world debut at the Mitzi E.Title: Monsters in America: Our Historical Obsession with the Hideous and the Haunting The whole profoundly disturbing, deceptively sprawling evening has been leading up to that last, quiet farewell-and when it comes, it's a moment of magic. Coincidentally, he has finished the wrenching experience of writing his autobiographical novel and, in telling about his bittersweet engagement in Thornton Wilder's play, he closes with a surreal incident from the production that leads to a very theatrical moment of emotional release. Finally, at the end of the incredible roller-coaster ride he has charted, Gray reaches the point that sends him and us home with a semblance of calm and understanding. By the time he has journeyed to Nicaragua with his ever-present girlfriend Renee to hear a congregation of grieving mothers tell of the atrocities the contras have committed, he is on a wild-eyed roll and when he arrives at a screening of "Moonstruck" at MoMA, obsessed with the idea that he is a victim of AIDS, he has reached a paroxysm of hysteria that is hilarious and horrifying. From there, Gray gradually picks up the pace, proceeding from his unsuccessful stab at working on the novel at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire to his equally fruitless attempts to keep writing while he is preparing a theater piece from the Mark Taper Forum. The "box" is a cardboard box, and within it is the "monster", a huge loose-leaf binder containing the pages of his novel. He begins with his ritualistic sipping of a glass of water, then slowly starts the action by explaining the title. The setting, as usual, was a table and a chair, and the author-performer appeared in his customary dark slacks and plain sports shirt. The evening, which lasted a little under 2 hours without intermission, was totally true to Gray tradition. It's a story within a story, as Gray explains it, "about a man who can't write a book about a man who can't take a vacation." And as Gray unwinds the trail of weird, sometimes demented episodes that marks the efforts to finish his manuscript, he links these tales to the internal battle he faces in trying to come to terms with his past. It's often very, very funny, as when he tells of being thrown out of the Hermitage Museum, but because the novel deals with Gray's Oedipal feelings toward his mother, it is also a dark and brooding work about the author's struggle to find inner peace. MONSTER, for example, is about the distractions Gray encountered while he was trying to write his upcoming novel, Impossible Vacation. The geography of Gray's stories always begins and ends within his psyche, and his stories, however delightful, are filled with strange, fearful terrors he has found therein. But like all of Gray's work, this one-man adventure story stakes out its most fascinating territory in the mind and spirit of its storyteller. MONSTER IN A BOX, the 13th of Spalding Gray's unique stage monologues, takes place in locations that skip from Nicaragua to New York and involves characters that range from a gathering of UFO enthusiasts in L.A. ![]() ![]() Rarely, formation of blisters has been reported.ĬAST: This gene encodes calpastatin, an endogenous protease inhibitor of calpain, which plays a role in various cell functions such as cell proliferation, differentiation, mobility, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis. The generalized dryness and peeling of the skin typically improves with age but can be triggered or aggravated by heat exposure, mechanical trauma to the skin and other external factors. Complete or almost complete filaggrin 2 deficiency due to loss-of-function variants in FLG2 results in decreased expression of CDSN, and generalized, non-inflammatory PSS. These genes encode either structural proteins of corneocytes, the cells of the outermost skin layer ( CDSN DSG1 FLG2 DSC3 JUP) or inhibitors of epidermal proteases ( SPINK5, CSTA CAST SERINB8), which are crucial regulators for the degradation of corneodesmosomes and shedding of corneocytes.įLG2: The filaggrin 2 gene ( FLG2) is co-expressed with corneodesmosin ( CDSN, see below) in the outermost layers of the skin, where it is cleaved into multiple small repeat units and is crucial for maintaining cell-cell adhesion. To date, genetic changes in several distinct genes have been reported to cause PSS. Due to the variable clinical presentations of PSS, its often mild features and gradual improvement with age, PSS may be underdiagnosed and underreported. In some patients, these disorders may be life-threatening, especially during the newborn period. The generalized inflammatory types, such as SAM syndrome or Netherton syndrome may be associated with generalized inflammation of the skin (erythroderma) or localized thickened, red plaques (erythrokeratoderma), immunodysfunction with elevated IgE levels, allergies, and susceptibility to infections, failure to thrive or metabolic wasting. In the localized types, individuals develop blisters and erosions on hands and feet at birth or during infancy, which is reminiscent of another blistering skin disorder, epidermolysis bullosa simplex. Skin peeling is often exacerbated by mechanical irritation of the skin, heat, sweat or water exposure or other external factors. Other findings associated with this disorder may include blistering and skin fragility, itching, short stature, and/or newly formed hairs that can be plucked out more easily than normal. Often, affected individuals and/or their caregivers can remove sheets of skin manually, comparable to skin peeling after a severe sunburn. Skin peeling occurs spontaneous, is painless, and may persist lifelong with gradual improvements. Most forms of PSS manifest at birth or during infancy with shedding or peeling of the outermost layer of the skin (horny layer, aka stratum corneum). Peeling skin syndrome belongs to the groups of congenital ichthyosis and skin fragility disorders with autosomal recessive inheritance. PSS may be caused by disease-causing variants in multiple genes encoding proteins with crucial functions for cell-cell adhesion: structural proteins forming cell-cell adhesion points (desmosomes, corneodesmosomes) and inhibitors of epidermal proteases that control skin shedding. Generalized PSS can be distinguished into an inflammatory type which is associated with erythema, involves other organ systems and is more severe, and a milder, non-inflammatory type. Based on the extent of skin involvement, PSS may involve the skin of the entire body (generalized form), or is limited to the extremities, mostly hands and feet (localized form). Symptoms may be present from birth or appear in early childhood and are often exacerbated by friction, heat or other external factors. Other findings may include blistering and/or reddening of the skin (erythema) and itching (pruritus). PSS is characterized by painless, continual, spontaneous skin peeling (exfoliation) due to a separation of the outermost layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) from the underlying layers. Peeling skin syndrome (PSS) is a group of rare inherited skin disorders in which the normal gradual process of invisible shedding of the outermost skin layers is hastened and/or aggravated. ![]() Stay Informed With NORD’s Email Newsletter.Find a Rare Disease Patient Organization. ![]() ![]() Find Clinical Trials & Research Studies. ![]() Launching Registries & Natural History Studies.A Podcast For The Rare Disease Community. ![]() ![]() The PUB Wilton Manors Gay bar & restaurant in Fort Lauderdale’s Wilton Manors. You probably want to analyze the traffic going through your ethernet. Once you get there look in the red text paragraphs and try to find what I was able to locate in the picture. You will now see a pop-up window on your screen. Then you will right click on it and go down to "FOLLOW" then to "TCP STREAM". You can see exactly what I am talking about if you follow the pictures above. Then at the far right of the packet in the info section you will see something like ".login" or "/login". Next, observe the traffic with a Wireshark and compare the patterns. This drastically narrows the search and helps to slow down the traffic by minimizing what pops up on the screen. To perform a stealth (SYN) scan on the network, use the nmap -sS 10.10.10.6 command in the Zenmap or Nmap. By filtering this you are now only looking at the post packet for HTTP. Wireshark comes with the option to filter packets. HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) is the protocol we will be dealing with when looking for passwords. After you start the last command, a list of packets from the file should start appearing on the screen.Īn example of remote capture using pipes can be found in Jesús Roncero's blog. The second step to finding the packets that contain login information is to understand the protocol to look for. This should start a capture from the named pipe /tmp/sharkfin. If you have a capture file in the right format (from Wireshark or tcpdump), you can do the following: $ mkfifo /tmp/sharkfin If you need a capture filter for a specific protocol, have a look for it at the ProtocolReference. There are two main ways to create a named pipe: with mkfifo or using special syntax of the bash shell. Wireshark uses the same syntax for capture filters as tcpdump, WinDump, Analyzer, and any other program that uses the libpcap/WinPcap library. ![]() One process can send data to it, and another process can read it. Named pipesĪ named pipe looks like a file, but it is really just a buffer for interprocess communication. If you’re interested in a packet with a particular IP address, type this into the filter bar: ip.adr x.x.x.x. This is a live packet capture, rather than a saved capture file, so you can configure Wireshark to show packets as they arrive, or to just show packet counts as they arrive and dissect and display packets when the capture is done, just as you can do with a live capture from a network interface. There are several ways in which you can filter Wireshark by IP address: 1. : capture traffic on the ethernet interface one for five minutes. Note that this does not permit capturing arbitrary protocols on a named pipe on your machine it only supports using a named pipe as a mechanism for supplying packets, in the form of a pcap or pcapng packet stream, to Wireshark. wireshark : run Wireshark in GUI mode wireshark h : show available command line parameters for Wireshark wireshark a duration:300 i eth1 w wireshark. On Windows, it must be typed slowly (or pasted). The named pipe is not listed in the drop-down interface selection, and must be typed into the interface box. A few patches have been mailed to the development list that could solve this, so if you find the approach inconvenient, try the patches. This only works with the de facto standard libpcap format version 2.4, as described in Development/LibpcapFileFormat, and with the standard pcapng format.Ĭapturing from a pipe is inconvenient, because you have to set up the pipe and put a file header into the pipe before you can start the capture. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wireshark-dev/stable With the PPA added to Ubuntu, it’s time to use the update command, as it is required to download the release file for the Wireshark software repository. There are some limitations that you should be aware of: To enable the third-party PPA, go to the terminal and use the add-apt-repository command. because it is not a network type supported by the version of libpcap/WinPcap on your machine, or because you want to capture traffic on an interface on another machine and your version of libpcap/WinPcap doesn't support remote capturing from that machine. This is useful if you want to watch a network in real time, and Wireshark cannot capture from that network, e.g. How do I run a Wireshark command How do I start Wireshark packet. Since pipes are supported, Wireshark can also read captured packets from another application in real time. As weve seen, a lot of examples were used to address the How To Boot Wireshark problem. Before pipes, Wireshark could read the captured packets to display either from a file (which had been previously created) or for a network interface (in real time). Wireshark is an essential tool for network administrators, but very few of them get to unleash its full potential. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Uniswap protocol keeps evolving, so even though other protocols with a similar interface have come to challenge Uniswap, the Uniswap team has managed to keep their platform fresh for users. Uniswap V3 has also recently been launched, bettering Uniswap's capital efficiency, execution and infrastructure. Since then, many exchanges have straight-up copied Uniswap's model because of its success and open-source code. As far as decentralized exchanges go, you can't go wrong with the DEX that brought decentralized exchanges to the forefront. This means that users will help the exchange's future by voting if they have staked any of the Uniswap tokens. The overarching goal of Uniswap is to have users, like you, handle the governance of the exchange. Uniswap is still, after all this time, at the cutting edge of decentralized finance. It's simple, effective and, perhaps more importantly for certain crypto enthusiasts, decentralized. You can quickly link Uniswap to your MetaMask and start swapping tokens. ![]() Uniswap's interface is one of the great things about the platform. Pricing is determined by how much of the asset is left in the liquidity pool. In return, users get a small percentage when assets from that pool are used. ![]() Users, like you, can add in pairs like ETH / DAI coins, for example, in order to add to the pool. Uniswap used innovative liquidity pools in order to generate the assets needed for swaps to occur. Instead, Uniswap made use of smart contracts that allow users to trade with each other without intermediaries, making it decentralized and peer-to-peer. The fact that you could swap Ethereum-based ERC20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain without an order book was quite a feat. ![]() When it first came out in 2018, Uniswap was revolutionary. This should give you a good view as to what kind of decentralized exchanges are out there right now and what some of the most used ones bring to the table. These exchanges are also organized by market volume from highest to lowest, at the time of writing, with the exception of Bisq. The only exception is Bisq, which was chosen for the values it brings to decentralization. The top 10 decentralized exchanges chosen here were, for the most part, chosen for having the highest market volume, a main objective metric. Fast forward to 2022, and decentralized exchanges have become immensely popular. They use automated market makers, asset pricing dictated by permissionless protocols and liquidity pools rather than buyers and sellers. In 2018, a new generation of decentralized exchanges have come to the fore. This model, however, was not as compatible on Ethereum, lacked liquidity and had a complicated user experience. The platform used smart contracts to manage trading wallets in the traditional order-book model. In 2016, EtherDelta began to imagine a more futuristic DEX. The first decentralized exchanges were very slow, with companies like Bisq allowing people to find each other off-chain and making peer-to-peer. A Short History of Decentralized Exchanges In this guide, we'll review the top decentralized exchanges that exist today. This makes trading private and quick, and you don't have to go through the tedious process of setting up a bank account, and trading account, which infringes on your privacy with intrusive and insecure Know-Your-Customer (KYC) surveys like your identity verification, home address, income, and much more. On decentralized exchanges, you merely have to connect your wallet, like MetaMask, and you are ready to trade directly from it. Asset custody, asset listing, liquidity, headquarters, director board and centralized trade execution are all qualities of a centralized exchange.įortunately, these can all be decentralized and that is what decentralized exchanges set out to do: entirely peer-to-peer trading platform's governed by software and users. The exchange acts as a custodian, holding assets as a market maker and finding those willing to sell assets to buyers. Traditional order-book model used by the exchange Kucoin. Besides, centralized exchanges utilize the order-book model that you would see in traditional stock exchanges, with a list of buy and sell orders. The key issue with centralized exchanges is that they are governed by a central authority - a company that controls your funds and data just like a traditional bank. Still, 2022 continues to see the rise of decentralized finance as the world inches closer and closer to decentralization. ![]() ![]() ![]() Moreover, it does not require registration, so you may check as many pages as you need in a short time, avoiding routine registrational processes.
